Unit 19: Resubmission Learning aim B
Film
I robot: In the script, at the start we can see the action line describe what the character said he would do. This was to play some time for when the victim is murdered by someone (this isn’t written in the script to add suspense or reveal who murdered the Doctor). In the script, Character ID, which is centered in the page and beneath that there is dialogue. The script's character ID is centered in the middle of the page. The dialogue can reveal parts of the scene such as if there is tension or a plot twist. The action lines use the full width of the page and give a brief description of what is likely to be seen in the setting for the reader. We also see the use of time direction in the action line "nothing for a few moments". This can build up tension for the scene and characters but will be useful for a change in tension or emotion. We can see that the words “gunshot” and “police” are capitalized to draw attention to the description of the tape. This clarifies what is going on in the scene and the danger that might happen or that could occur. It is effective at it since the words mean a lot since they’re capitalized to the description of what is happening in the environment. The capitalization of the words has instructions which communicate to the writer as in the script, since the writer’s formatted font is courier but is capitalized and needs to communicate to the film crew that they need to draw attention to these two words as they are important. We can see that the entire script’s font is courier as most movie scripts or screenplays. This font is stuck to since it is a mono-spaced font, meaning it has an equal amount of horizontal spacing in every letter. This makes it easier to read for most of the film crew who need to read the script clearly and visualize the scene as well as the rest of the story especially with the director as it needs to show what he pictures in his head and what the script be looked upon by others.
The script uses parentheticals to suggest when one character ID is focused it can change to a different person speaking. We see this in the script in parenthesis (to Victor) which shows the attention has shifted to another character ID, and to the video recording itself as an important item to the characters need to have. Also, this is done to go ahead and change the person they're talking to. This is to communicate with different people from different character ID’s which do concentrate on who is talking and whether they’re having a conversation or an argument relevant to the time and situation. For example, if the character ID if it was a conversation but it was in the middle of an intense battle then that would show inconsistent conversation and would seem awkward to be talking when people are just being murdered. In this script that isn’t done and is responsible for the actors to say their lines underneath each of them centered. The general formatting is done by the writer. The dialogue has instructions for the actors since they need to react to what they see on the screen of the video recording. This is to convince the reader that they can act out the scene or character in a particular way. This part of the I robot script is impactful as the characters are looking at some evidence that is solid proof of a murder by someone they never knew. The impact Calvin and Spooner have on the film is that tension is created and sets up for another murder but foreshadows in the process the intentions that the director or writer wants for the film. As a full-length feature film, I robot does deviate from the original screenplay in the final product. The film is suitable for mature young adults. This is because the script does not swear or suggest or over extreme violence but still contains some graphic content described in the script. It is targeted towards this age group as it centers around science fiction, and this is mentioned in the script. I think this is an effective script because of how the writers have set up a reveal of tension from the murder of one victim, since this leads to more than one person being harmed and therefore it is effective for that reason, it develops the narrative.
Ocean's eleven:
Television:
News report script (non-fiction television)The script itself is a television news report. The script is formatted as a table. The first column titled as timing, the second column titled as video and the third titled as Audio. In the time column, the first numbers are 00 and 0012. This is how much time has passed at the very beginning in seconds. To go along with this, we have the video column and the audio column. We will focus on the audio column since that is what most scripts or screenplays focus on and there is a separate script for camera shots, angles and positions. We hear a Voice over explaining and reporting about the driving test and young people. The dialogue starts at 00 and is timed which communicates that the news reporter has already reported over the top of the video that is being played out, which clarifies the description of what is going on in each recording. This is effective for creating something that needs to focus on a specific topic just like a news story. It points out the role of the camera man and sound department. The sound department really concentrates on keeping the sound quality as high as possible. This is to make sure that people can really listen to what people are saying in the news report. The story is what the news report focuses on, which is driving as a skill for young people. Television news report is designed to inform older people, Adults would be the primary audience that this kind of script is targeted towards. Other audiences such as a younger audience, maybe young adults would be interested in a news report. This is an effective script as it delivers the story very well and emphasizes the reporting of news. It tells it to us in a quick and accurate direction.
Fiction television script (Star trek):
Metal gear solid GDD
In the metal gear solid script, there is a lot of description of the story for the game. The script is laid out like a book or professional document. There isn't any dialogue, but arrows which point towards the next plot point or action that will happen from the player's inputs to the objectives in the game script.
The objective is what we see later in the game script as the arrows point towards the players objectives. These arrows are specific features of a game script. It allows game developers and game designers to adapt and develop the games objectives in the surroundings just as there is objectives for the main characters to achieve in a film or the main characters in a television sitcom must achieve an objective. On the other page we can see the flowchart of these objectives the player must achieve, to progress through the game or for one single level. It's laid out this way to communicate to the player in the script why the story is useful and how useful the story is presented. This is effective as a reminder to the player and the script. Its effective for the reader or player as it guides them towards a specific idea or challenge needed to overcome for the main story. It is effective to the script as it is easier to read the objectives. It’s also more organized for each objective since it doesn’t need to refer to the same setting more than once. Plus, it adds a level of detail to the scripts story since it aligns with the description of what is intended, the subconscious purpose of the story. Its themes of war are in Bold and are subheadings to talk about how the main conceptual ideas around the time of the game being developed. This clarifies the genre of the game once it is being played by people. They are effective at highlighting to the reader of the script what the main story and why this is growth for the time of the script and the game.
In short, the result of this game script should communicate:
-what the player must accomplish in a fun way to the reader of the script
-how each objective and the levels should align to the storytelling of the script
-how the characters and enemies are important elements like actors for television or film.
The flow chart is overlooking the game development department and the game level designers or creators. The long description of the story in metal gear solid is to communicate to gameplay directors and gameplay department. They have control of the direction that the game must play out. Each of the objective and story description about war sets up the next mission or possible cutscene or conversation between characters. We can see narratives of activity and tension between the US and foreign countries like Iraq, North Korea and Russia lure tension into the developed story prior to Metal gear solid 1. This sets up emotion to a particular character’s death being setup later into the story. The script metal gear solid appeals to an older more mature adults since it deals with themes such as terrorism between countries attacking each other using metal gear. It may appeal to a younger audience from the final product being a video games and video games are seen as fun and entertaining. I think that this is a good script as it has a detailed and interesting story. The premise of the flowchart in the script is to go ahead and deliver objectives, decisions for the player and see how they react to them. This aligns with the story or action lines (long description) of what is happening outside of them playing the game.
Evaluation
Formatting:
Television vs film:
In the case of a television script with the example provided; the film script doesn’t need the shots for the camera to be timed with the visuals and the audio timed with the shots. That isn’t useful for the individuals involved in the film script. Films isn't just the visuals, lights, camera and action. In fact, there are whole film documents which look at the shots of the setting.
Conventions:
The conventions of the Television scripts are to films. In films people are acting out stunts, their voice lines and movements in a fancy way. In television we won’t see this as much depending on what type of television it is. A constantly watched television show such as a live sport coverage or an interview. This is to make sure that people stay involved in what they see alongside the video and audio.
Television vs Videogames
Formatting:
Television scripts use pages for organizing the main story. Television must have the timing of everything written out. One is that a script is titled. In television they necessarily would require writing.
Conventions:
This is to television which may use a flexi narrative or Multi strand narrative. In scripts there are quite a lot of expositions. This is a to a television script which will use lots of exposition to make sure the script.
Videogames vs Films
Formatting
For example, are formatted with all the story and more about the main character and characters as important information towards the player, which is done by writing this at the top of the page. A film script which does not write the intentions of the director for the specific film and rather heads straight.
Conventions:
This is like as they are dependent on what type of genre of that is going to be developed and how each player will react to that. Films is the exposure to a large amount of exposition.
The most effective script has been film scripts (closely followed by video game scripts). This is because film scripts are the easiest to follow in terms of the formatting and conventions which can be helpful for actors, directors and other important jobs. Film scripts are also very much a very organized and very adaptable draft. They allow for better construction of writing and reading to imagine how the person in the audience feels about a specific character or how the setting makes them feel. Does it leave audiences on the edge of their seats? Therefore, film scripts are so effective as they can be adjusted to set up a specific feeling or sequence of events.
The least effective scripts are television scripts. This is because on live television camera zooming and editing in and out of shots does create good entertainment. However, films and video games can do it better since they include much clearer or more detailed written documents about how things are run. Television scripts are too simple and don’t need as much detail to use one, yet each shot must be timed with the video and audio. Therefore, they are inefficient or the least effective as they don’t require as much effort to use or operate compared to a film or videogame script.
The main difference across all scripts in all the sectors is their mode of address when writing about something. Each has different features and ways of addressing their ideas across a sheet of paper or online in a document. For example, the video game script is different from the television script since they have different modes of addressing their ideas on something. Video games don’t operate the same way as a television show or movie. The actions in video games are done by the player (the audience). This is different from film as the action is rehearsed. It’s different from television as you don’t get advertising into your game allowing freedom.
